DALLACHY AEROMODELLERS

Archive film footage confirms that rubber-powered models were being flown at Cooper Park in Elgin before WW2. The 'New Elgin and District Model Club' was founded in the late 1940s by group of enthusiasts flying control line, free-flight and rubber-powered models. Before settling at Dallachy Airfield as 'Elgin Aeromodellers', the fledgling Club became the "Elgin District Aeromodelling Club' and flew from "Jeannie Shaw's Widdie", the Doocote Park, Morriston Playing Fields, Cooper Park, Pinefield, Milltown Airfield and The Cloddach.

Dallachy was a wartime base which was purpose-built for Coastal Command. After the occupation of Europe, it was a satellite for 14(P) AFU Banff. Established in October 1944, Dallachy Strike Wing comprised Squadrons of Beaufighters including 144 Squadron RAF, 404 Squadron RCAF, 455 Squadron RAAF and 489 Squadron RNZAF. Wellingtons of 524 Squadron used the base for night-flying operations.

Initially the Club shared the Dallachy site with the Fulmar Gliding Club. When the gliders moved away to Birnie, south of Elgin, the aeromodellers acquired the lease of the gliders' strip from the Crown Estates Commissioners. In recent years, the Club has grown in membership and made many improvements to make flying safer and life more comfortable for Club members.

In recognition of our permanent location, and the fact that our members are drawn from not just Elgin but from many miles around Dallachy, in 2004 the Club agreed to change its name to:
DALLACHY AEROMODELLERS.
